The 2023 Atlantic hurricane season is underway. NOAA predicts a near normal season this year.
NOAA forecasts a likely range of 12 to 17 named storms, of which 5 to 9 could become hurricanes, including 1 to 4 major hurricanes, which are a Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale.
Here’s a look at the season so far.
Arlene
Arlene became the first named tropical storm of the season on June 2 in the Gulf of Mexico.
Before it became a storm, it was Tropical Depression Two and brought rain and scattered thunderstorms to parts of Florida.
Arlene was short-lived as it headed south toward the Cuba.
