The importance of sunglasses and what kinds to buy

We are in the midst of the sunniest months of the year and protecting your eyes from the harmful ultraviolet radiation should be one of the most important things you can do when spending time outside.

What You Need To Know

  • Sunglasses protect the eye from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation
  • Experts recommend always using sunglasses with a UV filter
  • Sunglasses prevent direct exposure to pollution and dust as well
  • Long-term damage to your eyes may occur from a prolonged period of not wearing sunglasses

If you’re shopping around for a new pair of shades, style and brand recognition shouldn’t be the factors in making your new purchase. Instead, look for a pair that will better serve your eyes in the long run.

Two things to look: a UV filter and polarization

UV lens filters prevent dust and dirt from coming into contact with the lens, essentially acting as a protective cover that shields it at all times.

A special chemical is applied to the lenses of polarized sunglasses, which works by filtering out some of the light passing through the lens. These types of sunglasses are more effective at blocking the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun, and thus, are typically more expensive.

Not wearing sunglasses can cause long-term eye damage

If you choose to not wear sunglasses, the effects on your eyes could be damaging. Over time, cataracts and clouding of your eye lens may occur.

While wearing sunglasses keeps your eyes healthy, it also lowers the risk of developing cataracts, corneal degeneration, dry eyes, retinal damage and skin cancer around the eyes at a younger age.

Even if you only plan to be in the sun for a brief amount of time, wearing sunglasses is highly recommended. At the same time, you look cool and don’t have to squint!
