The high heat for Florida is not over yet

It’s a hot end to the week across central Florida, and more heat is likely heading into next week.

What You Need To Know

  • Highs soared in the upper 90s
  • A second round of high heat is becoming likely
  • Highs could climb into the upper 90s again late next week

Wednesday through Saturday has featured daily highs at the Orlando International Airport in the mid to the upper 90s, well above the average high of 91.

The good news is cooler weather is ahead for Sunday and next week.

The bad news is the slightly cooler temperatures won’t be around for long.

Computer guidance is beginning to indicate a second round of high heat is becoming likely. This round would begin on Thursday and likely last into next weekend.

Once again, highs are expected to soar back into the mid 90s, with upper 90s very possible. This will increase the heat index, or “feels like” temperatures, to the point that heat advisories may be necessary.

So, what’s causing all the heat across the sunshine state?

A ridge of high pressure has developed over the southeastern United States. This ridge helps heat to build across an area, which is why many areas northwest of Florida have seen temperatures in the triple digits.

The ridge will begin to break down early this week, which will allow slightly cooler air to return.

But the ridge will re-establish itself later in the week, once again opening the door for hot conditions to push into the area.

Right now, forecast highs are in the mid to upper 90s. But there are indications that upper 90s, and possibly 100+ degrees, may be possible in parts of the area late week into next weekend.

There is good news with this ridge — it is effective at keeping tropical systems away.

Large ridges of high pressure help steer tropical complexes away from their center. If a system were to develop, it would likely be sent well away from Florida.

And the ridge won’t last forever. Eventually a more typical Florida weather pattern is expected to close out the month of June.

So while Florida is known for its heat, this high heat has been a test for many. And it’s may not be going away anytime soon.
