From shorts to jackets, January brought a mix of weather

January started with temperatures near 80 degrees, but by the end of the month, the weather had you reaching for the heavier winter coat and turning on the heat.

Orlando started the month with a few days running 10 to 14 degrees warmer than normal. By the end of the month, Orlando experienced days where the temperatures were around 10 to 15 degrees colder than average.

What You Need To Know

  • There was a 50-degree temperature spread from the start of January to the end
  • Temperatures were close to record warmth at the start of the month while close to record-cold lows to finish
  • The largest rainfall deficit was in Ocala during January

These temperature extremes acted to counterbalance one another, so much so that temperatures did not fall much or at all below the monthly average for January.

Temperature swings were the big weather impact during the month. Rainfall was pretty sparse for most of Central Florida.

Orlando, Daytona Beach and Sanford all finished with temperatures close or at average for January, even though the last days were frigid by Florida standards.

The cities that finished colder than normal were Ocala, Melbourne and Leesburg.

Melbourne and the rest of Central Florida experienced the coolest January compared to average.

Here, temperatures were near two degrees colder than average. In comparison, Ocala and Leesburg were about a degree cooler than normal.

Even though January seemed to bring plenty of cold fronts, the rain was pretty sparse.

Every city mentioned here finished more than an inch drier than average to start 2022.

Ocala had the biggest rainfall deficit. The city went nearly two and a half inches drier than normal.

January is not known for a lot of rain, however, the average rainfall for most locations runs between two and three inches.

Most cities across Central Florida only measured around an inch of rain.
