As part of the Orlando Police Department’s commitment to excellence and remaining an accredited agency, a team of assessors from the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) will arrive August 7, 2018 to examine all aspects of the Orlando Police Department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. The Orlando Police Department has to comply with approximately 260 standards in order to receive accredited status. Many of the standards are critical to life, health, and safety issues.
The Orlando Police Department has been accredited since 1997. In 2012, the Orlando Police Department achieved Excelsior status. Excelsior status is given to agencies who have been awarded five successful reaccreditation cycles by the Commission. The Excelsior Recognition Program became the highest level of achievement in Florida accreditation a criminal justice agency can receive.
As part of the on-site assessment, agency members and the general public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team. A copy of the standards is available through the Orlando Police Department’s Public Information Officer at opdpio@cityoforlando.net.
The CFA Accreditation Program Manager for the Orlando Police Department is Deborah Moody. The assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similar agencies. The assessors will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be witnessed. The CFA Assessment Team Leader is Juli Brown from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Other team members are Major Sabrina Maxwell from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco and Sergeant Todd Turpack from Clearwater Police Department.
Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency receives accredited status. The Orlando Police Department’s accreditation is for three years. Verification by the team that the Orlando Police Department meets the Commission’s standards is part of a voluntary process to gain or maintain accreditation; a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.
